Funeral Cover

Dignity, support and financial peace of mind when it matters most.

Cinagi’s Group Funeral Cover provides fast-access cash benefits to help employees and their families manage the immediate costs of a funeral. Employers can choose cover levels and family structures that match their workforce, from employee-only cover to comprehensive family and extended-family options. Cover is underwritten by Bryte Life Company Limited.

Why choose Cinagi Group Funeral Cover?

  • Flexible cover levels – select a sum insured that suits your benefit design and budget, from R10,000 up to R100,000 per life assured, in multiples of R5,000.
  • Family and extended-family options – choose between employee-only cover, employee plus immediate family, or employee plus extended family structures.
  • Quick cash payouts – lump sum benefits are paid to the nominated beneficiary (for the employee) or to the employee (for covered family members), helping with funeral and related costs.
  • Optional grocery benefit – an additional payment to assist the family with immediate living expenses after a bereavement.
  • Repatriation service – assistance and transport of mortal remains back to a funeral home closest to the place of burial within defined territories.
  • Integrated with Wellniciti Savings – exclusive access to Cinagi’s loyalty savings programme for primary health care and everyday grocery savings, helping employees stretch their money further.

How The Cover Works

The monetary value of funeral cover is determined by the employer based on the required level of protection and affordability. The chosen sum insured applies as the base benefit for employees and is then adjusted by age-related sub-limits for children and stillbirths.

Benefit structure by family member:

  • Employee, spouse, parent or child aged 14 years and older: 100% of the selected sum insured.
  • Child aged 5 – 14 years: 50% of the selected sum insured.
  • Child aged 0 – 5 years: 25% of the selected sum insured.
  • Stillborn child (from 26 weeks’ gestation): 12.5% of the selected sum insured.

Premiums are set in rand terms per policy. In the event of an employee passing away, the applicable benefit is paid as a lump sum to the employee’s nominated beneficiary. When a covered family member passes away, the applicable benefit is paid as a lump sum to the employee.

Who Can Be Covered?

Employers can structure their group funeral benefit to cover different categories of lives assured. Options typically include:

  • Employees only (member-only cover).
  • Employees and their immediate family (spouse and children).
  • Employees, immediate family and extended family (for example, parents or other nominated relatives), subject to product rules and underwriting.

Key family definitions

For clarity, the following definitions apply to covered family members:

CHILD

A child is an unmarried person who is financially dependent on the employee and is described as one of the following:

  • A child born of the main member.
  • A dependent stepchild of the member.
  • A foster child of the member.
  • A child legally adopted by the member.
  • A stillborn child, being a child that has had at least 26 weeks of intra-uterine existence but shows no sign of life after complete birth (excluding intentional termination).
  • A grandchild, being a child of the member’s children, where both the child’s parents are deceased or the child is dependent on the member.

SPOUSE

A spouse is the person with whom the member is joined in marriage or permanent partnership, and includes:

  • A partner in a marriage or union recognised by the Marriage Act, the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act, the Civil Union Act, or the tenets of a religion.
  • A person living with the member in a relationship of mutual dependence, sharing a common household in the manner of a spouse.
  • Common-law and same-sex partners are included in the definition of spouse, subject to nomination requirements.
  • The member must nominate their spouse in writing within three months of joining the policy or entering as a new member. Changes to the nominated spouse must be made in writing within three months of marriage, divorce or death.
  • If the member has more than one spouse, the spouse who qualifies first for a benefit is the spouse married first or the spouse expressly nominated by the member.

Optional Benefits to Enhance Your Cover

Grocery Cover

To help the family cope with immediate day-to-day expenses after a death, an additional grocery benefit can be added. Under this option, an extra 10% of the applicable funeral cover benefit is paid by EFT to assist with short-term living costs.

Repatriation Service

The repatriation service assists with the return of the deceased’s mortal remains to a funeral home closest to the place of burial in South Africa. Transport is provided by road or air from anywhere in South Africa, Lesotho, Eswatini (Swaziland), Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, or Mozambique south of the -22 degree latitude line.

Where death occurs in South Africa, the place of death must be more than 150 km from the place of burial to qualify for the repatriation service. This benefit is limited to a maximum of R20,000 per claim event.

  • Referral to a pathologist where an autopsy is required.
  • Referral to reputable funeral parlours and tombstone suppliers.
  • Assistance with other funeral-related services such as catering and transport, where available.

Wellniciti Savings – Exclusive to Cinagi Clients

Wellniciti is Cinagi’s loyalty savings programme, available exclusively to Cinagi gap cover and funeral cover clients. It is designed to put extra money back in your employees’ pockets through savings on primary healthcare services and everyday groceries.

    • Payment of the discounted consultation fee is made through the secure online payment portal to confirm the booking.

    Loyalty Savings: Retail

Wellniciti also offers retail savings on a wide range of everyday grocery items at selected retail partners – Shoprite, Checkers and Checkers Hyper.

    • Employees log in to view a catalogue of everyday items such as food, cleaning materials and toiletries on which savings coupons are available.
    • Savings coupons are added to a virtual “Basket” (up to a maximum number of coupons per product per month).
    • At checkout, the selected coupons are consolidated into 16‑digit code(s) sent via SMS.
    • Before paying in-store, the employee presents the code(s) to the cashier and the total saving is deducted from the grocery bill.
    • Codes are valid for one calendar month, and savings apply over and above in‑store promotions, helping employees save hundreds of rand every month on their shopping.

Wellniciti is a separate loyalty product sold and administered by Cinagi. The cost of Wellniciti, which is automatically included in applicable Cinagi products, is included in the total monthly Cinagi benefit cost. Limits, terms and conditions apply.
